The Best Alternative to a Fitted Home Office

For the discerning homeowner, the challenge is no longer just making a place to work, but integrating a workspace into a living, changing environment without compromising on design or quality of your space.
Whether you are navigating the vertical constraints of a Victorian townhouse or the white walls of a contemporary apartment, the requirement is the same: a productive workspace that feels designed, appropriate, bespoke and yet remains infinitely adaptable.

As we move towards a more conscious way of inhabiting our homes, the focus is shifting from permanent joinery to modular systems, investing in furniture that doesn’t just fill a room, but evolves with the life lived within it.

The ON&ON system isn't just modular furniture; our made-to-measure components offer a precision fit without the permanence of traditional joinery. The ON&ON system will give you a great place to work, extra storage space, great design and endless configurations.

5 New ideas for a work or study space

Not sure where you can use the ON&ON desk system? Here are 5 simple ideas to help you identify the best space in your home. We’ve used several floor plans from existing customers homes and apartments and explored where the ON&ON desk system can make the biggest difference.

1. Add to your living room or kitchen extension

Make full use of any large unused walls in your extension. Here, you can maximise the desk size for yourself or your family.  Create long lengths of shelving above.  Perfect for a computer, but also great for writing, drawing, painting and homework.

System A: Create a visible open display system in your extension, used by the whole family; with an extra area for laptop work and phone charging.

System B: In a more compact living room the best position would be in a quieter, traffic-free area. Further away from a TV and towards more natural light. Create a stream-lined proffesional looking place to work, designed to help manage your clutter and store any larger files and books.

2. Transform your spare room

It's easy to reconfigure our system to fit different wall lengths. This will allow you to have either a large dedicated office space or a space you can still include a sofa bed for guests.

System C: This clever layout features a large, single seamless desk spanning between two walls, custom-built for two people. A central floor pedestal provides essential shared storage, complemented by overhead shelving to keep essentials within reach. On the opposite wall a shelving system has been used as a wall to wall media unit with enough space for CDs, vinyl collection and turntables.

System D: The Spare room doubles up as a TV space, sofa bed for guests and everyday workspace. A wall shelving system designed as a large TV wall unit at one end, positioned in front of the sofa and a work area positioned at the opposite end.

3. Re-think your bedroom

If you're tight on space, our desk system can transform your bedroom, creating more space, a place to hang clothes, store things away, and create a work or study area.

System G: Fit everything you need into one room. Make a hanging space for your clothes, a cabinet to hide things away, shelving for storage and a large desk for all your study work. All designed into one compact wall system.

System H: Don't let your vertical space go to waste. Maximise your room's potential by adding a mix of standard and mini-shelves to keep all your books and files perfectly organised above your desk.

4. Upgrade your Basement or loft

Make the most of your floor levels if you're converting a basement or creating a loft conversion. The ON&ON system can be sized and configured to fit into awkward spaces, between walls and under sloping roofs.

System F: Not enough space for a large shelving system or workspace? Squeeze in two between walls or fit into awkward spaces. One for gaming and one for work.
